Delivering meals and smiles in Cowichan Valley
April 24, 2025

Volunteering is more than just a hobby for Belinda Wright—it's a way of life.
Inspired by her father's more than 50 years of service with the Lantz Volunteer Fire Department in Nova Scotia, "I wanted to do something that feels like I'm making a difference," Belinda explained.
When Belinda saw a Facebook post seeking volunteers for the Cowichan Green Community Foundation’s Meals on Wheels program, she knew it was the perfect fit. Twice a week, she delivers meals, providing not only nourishment but also a friendly face and a moment of connection for those who need it most.
"Belinda is an extraordinarily dedicated and community-driven volunteer," says Dr. Vanessa Daether, Executive Director, Cowichan Green Community Foundation. "She delivers meals to seniors throughout our community, including this past Christmas Day. Belinda is also a committed volunteer outside of our organization providing support to seniors with groceries, picking up prescriptions and other errands."
Belinda's commitment to the community extends to her role in the PC Express department at the Real Canadian Superstore in Duncan, BC. "I love my job," Belinda shares, having been with the company since September 2022. "When I was researching the company, I came across information about the Loblaw Volunteer Grant program."
The Loblaw Volunteer Grant celebrates full/part time colleagues and employees who volunteer more than 40-hours per year for a local charity or non-profit community organization. Since 2019, Loblaw has granted more than $160,000 to deserving volunteers across the Enterprise and the organizations they so graciously volunteer their time with.
"Personally, it makes me feel good knowing that my volunteer efforts are being recognized and supported by my employer," Belinda says. "And that Loblaws values my volunteering so much that they are donating to help support more clients to access the Meals on Wheels program."
For the past three years, Belinda has applied for and received the Loblaw Volunteer Grant, providing $500 annually to the Cowichan Green Community Foundation’s Meals on Wheels program.
"The $500 Loblaw Volunteer Grant donation goes towards providing 50 meals for Seniors," said Dr. Daether. "Belinda's generosity helps make our Meals on Wheels program accessible by reducing a key barrier to enrollment."
Belinda emphasizes the impact of the Meals on Wheels program: "The most rewarding aspect is seeing the smiles on the faces of the clients I serve and knowing that I am making a difference, however small, to their day."
For colleagues and employees considering volunteering, Belinda's message is clear: "Do it, what are you waiting for? Volunteering gives you something that you never knew was missing, a purpose and a feeling of peace that you are helping do something to help others without expecting anything in return."
Belinda plans to continue her work with the Cowichan Green Community Foundation. "I volunteer because I am able to," she explains, "and you should too if you are able as there is nothing like the feeling you get from helping others with no expectation of anything in return."
She is grateful for the Loblaw Volunteer Grant Program, adding, "To know that the program is there to encourage employees to volunteer and support their volunteer efforts is greatly appreciated.”
