The value behind every aisle
July 28, 2026
It’s the Friday afternoon before a long weekend.
A customer stops by their local Loblaw store to pick up everything they need for a family barbecue: burgers, buns, fresh produce, beverages and snacks. As they move through the aisles, they effortlessly find the products they’re looking for and head to checkout, ready for the weekend ahead.
For the customer, it’s a simple shopping trip.
For Supply Chain teams, it’s the result of months of planning. Using forecasting tools and data insights, planners anticipate which products customers will need and where demand will be highest. They work closely with suppliers to help ensure products are ready to move through the network.
From there, products travel through Loblaw's distribution centres, where they're received, sorted and prepared for store orders. Transportation teams coordinate deliveries across the country, helping stores stay ready for customers and the communities they serve. That is how Supply Chain creates value; by anticipating customer needs before they arrive.
For customers, value means more than price. It means finding the products they need when they need them and having confidence their local store will be stocked.
One of Canada's largest supply chain networks helps make that possible. With more than 25 distribution centres, over 13 million square feet of warehousing space and a transportation fleet of more than 800 trucks and 8,000 trailers, Loblaw moves more than one million loads annually to serve communities across the country.
While customers spend just a few minutes choosing the products they need, those same products may have travelled hundreds, or even thousands, of kilometres on the road or overseas through a carefully coordinated network before reaching the shelf.
"Customers may only see the products on the shelf, but behind every item is a network working together to ensure it arrives where and when it's needed. Every route we optimize, every delivery we make and every efficiency we gain helps create a more reliable experience for customers and supports our commitment to delivering value to Canadians," shared Wael Yehia, Vice President, National Transportation.
When products move efficiently through the network, stores are better prepared to respond to changing customer demand. Better forecasting, faster replenishment and optimized transportation help reduce out-of-stocks and create a more reliable shopping experience.
As customer expectations continue to evolve, Loblaw is investing in new ways to strengthen its supply chain. The recently opened automated distribution centre in East Gwillimbury, Ontario, combines advanced automation with the expertise of distribution centre team members to help move products more efficiently, improve store replenishment and strengthen the resilience of the network.
Across the transportation network, teams are also advancing initiatives to improve fleet efficiency and reduce emissions while maintaining the reliable service customers depend on.
While much of this work happens behind the scenes, its impact is visible every day through stocked shelves, fresh products and the confidence customers have when they shop.
Whether it's hosting a family barbecue, packing school lunches or picking up everyday essentials, every successful shopping trip reflects the coordinated efforts of planners, suppliers, distribution centre team members, transportation teams and store teams working together to deliver value.
For customers, it's a successful shopping trip. Behind that simple experience are thousands of decisions, partnerships and innovations working together to help ensure Canadians can find the products they need, when they need them. This is how Supply Chain helps create value every day and help Canadians Live Life Well®.
